Salkantay Classic Hike 5D/4N

The hike starts at the base of Salcantay mountain at 3,883 meters and brings you down through five ecological zones to Machu Picchu, giving you the opportunity to pass through mountains, cloud forests, and jungle.

Day 1: Cusco  – Soraypampa (Humantay Lake)-salkantaypampa

We start to pick up you on the hotel around 05:00 am, the bus driving taking 5 hours to soraypampa, we will meet with our support staff. There we will organize all the equipment, horses and mules. Around 9:30 a.m.

The first section of the path is up to the Humantay lake (4200masl) 5 km in 3 hours round trip, bottom the glacier the most spectacular views to the back ground valley , here we have lunch and after it we continue walking for about 2 more hours to our camp side salkantay pampa which is located at 4.000mts.

Day 2: Salkantaypampa – salkantay lake- qolpapampa (extra option to see the second lake )

After breakfast we start hiking up to the highest point of the trail Salkantay Pass (4650 masl – 15,255 ft) the distance is 6 km in 3 hours, on the ascent through the between the rocky valley bottom the magnificent Salkantay Mountay (6200 masl – 20,341 ft).On top of the trek, We will appreciate spectacular views of the mountains and the imposing snowy peaks of the Salkantay, humantay, Tucarhuay and Pumasillo, Salkantay (is optional to visit the second lake ) 2 hours downhill on the serpent trail and gravel rocky path , we  get lunch spot, aftet lunch  “cloud forest” 9 km in 3 hours on the wide trail with colorful sceneries and the wild life and native plants to finally arrived to qolpapampa Village (2900 masl – 9,514 ft)

Day 3: Qolpapampa – la Playa – lucmabamba (Cocalmayo Hot Spring)

Around 5:30 am we wake up , breakfast and hiking straight to la Playa crossing on the thick jungle and following the river,  on the trail will be able to see ,(passion fruit, banana, coffee, avocado, mango, orange , papayas and more). the trail distance is 16 km the hiking time is 5 hours on the down valley ,After lunch, we will have an incredible experience of nature at it’s purest form, touring a coffee plantation adjacent to the campsite. We will begin by browsing the fields, learning about the different types of beans and picking our own beans. Then we will take the local transport for 30mins to the  natural hot springs at Cocalmayo.

Day 4: Hot spring – machupicchu view point -Hydroeletric – Aguas Calientes (Zipline is optional )

At 5:00 am time to stand up to start a new day, after breakfast we  start to walking up to llactapata inka side , fantastic views  of  machupicchu, waynapicchu, salkantay mountain, and all the Aobamba valley. After explanation and photos we going down  2 hours to hydroelectric for our lunch, we going to walk along the train track close to the bank of Urubamba river from there is appreciate the holy mountains as Waynapicchu and Machupicchu Mountains, to finally arrived to Aguas calientes town of Machupicchu for overnight in the hostel and dinner at the tourist restaurant. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Overnight in Aguas Calientes.

Day 5: The most important day Machu Picchu! – Cusco

We suggestion start early visit Machupicchu the check point is open from (6:00 am until 17:00 pm) optional going up by bus or foot, on the morning look empty the city with less tourist the first 2 hours guiding tour in the City, (temples, palaces, priest house, sundial, industrial sector and farming fields) after that is start your free time to climbing up to Huaynapicchu or Machupicchu mountain (book in advance to get your ticket) both mountains hiking time taking 3 hours approx. or trekking to the sun gate the main entrance of the Inka Trail, therefore you’ll stay and enjoy the city for more than 7 hours on the afternoon We organized the train (18:30 pm) back form Aguas calientes to Ollantaytambo and then bus driving to Cusco to arrive at 22:30 pm approx. the bus drops you off at your hotel in Cusco.

Our experienced chefs make amazing meals in the middle of the mountains and are also used to preparing dishes for people with different food restrictions or lifestyles, so please let us know your preferences and we will make sure to meet your dietary needs.

What to Bring:

  •  Original passport and student ISIC card (if applicable)

Huayna Picchu: If you are interested in climbing Huayna Picchu, the mountain overlooking Machu Picchu, there is an additional fee of $20 USD per person for us to buy your entrance ticket. Spaces are limited, so please let us know when booking whether you would like to hike Huayna Picchu, and we will reserve it for you. Montaña machupicchu:This second option is other challange to see machupicchu  from the upper part , there is an additional fee of $20 USD per person for us to buy your entrance ticket. Spaces are limited, so please let us know when booking whether you would like to hike Montaña machupicchu, and we will reserve it for you.

Hotel Upgrade: Included in this tour is one night at a comfortable Hostel in Aguas Calientes. However, if you would like to upgrade to a 3, 4, or 5 star hotel, please just let us know what type of hotel you prefer and we can upgrade your accommodations.

Sleeping Bags: If you would like to rent a sleeping bag from us, the price is $25 USD per person in total for the hike.

Trekking Poles: We recommend taking trekking poles on the hike especially when hiking downhill. If you would like to rent a pair for the whole hike, the price is $20 USD per person.

Vistadome Train: Our price includes a return train ticket in the Expedition train, however, if you would like to upgrade to the Vistadome train the price is an additional $50 USD per person.

We only require a minimum of 2 people to start this hike, so if there are at least 2 people total in your group we can organize your hike for the start date that you choose. If you are traveling by yourself, please email us to check the availability and let us know the hike(s) you are interested in and the dates when you are available to start the hike.

If you would like tickets to climb “Huayna Picchu” or “la montaña” after your tour of Machu Picchu, we will reserve a ticket for you as long as there is availability.

After sending your personal information, the next step is for each person in your group to make a deposit of $200 USD to reserve your hike. To receive the student discount, you must send an email at the time you reserve your spot with a scan of both sides of your student ISIC card. This is the only student card accepted by the National Park and you can find more information about this student ID on the ISIC website here. The remaining balance is due in Cusco. You may pay in cash (either in US dollars or Peruvian soles) at your briefing.
